Sutton appointed Lincoln City Manager in 'calculated gamble'

Former Blackburn Rovers and Chelsea striker Chris Sutton has been named as the new manager of struggling League Two side Lincoln City.

The Imps have been without a manger since the dismissal of Peter Jackson and his assistant Iffy Onuora four weeks ago.

Sutton, who has no managerial experience, was one of 70 applicants for the position and fought off competition from the likes of Gary Brabin and current caretaker manager Simon Clark.

The board has described the appointment as a 'calculated gamble' but as he was presented to the press, Sutton vowed to win over any fans who were concerned with his lack of experience.

"This is a great opportunity for myself and I wouldn't be here if I wasn't ready" said Sutton.

"I couldn't be more excited, it is a big challenge. I understand people will be sceptical because it is my first managerial job but Alex Ferguson started somewhere and Martin O'Neill started somewhere."

Sutton begins hid new job on Wednesday which means Simon Clark will remain in charge for tonight's clash with Notts County.

Sutton will be joined by his former Blackburn team-mate Ian Pearce who joins the club in a player/coach role.

City's vice chairman Bob Dorrian told the club's website that he was very impressed with the attitude of his new manager.

"Chris is very young, he's very very ambitious, he's enthusiastic, he's energetic and he has a vision for Lincoln City."

"He has spent the last two years taking his coaching badges, talking to Premiership managers and preparing himself for his career in management."
